What is Masturbation Month and how can I celebrate it?

What is Masturbation Month and how can I celebrate it?

International Masturbation Month, celebrated in May, is a commemorative month for the promotion and normalization of masturbation as a healthy part of being a human. Masturbation makes us feel good, it helps to reduce stress, ease pain and learn about our bodies. Regardless of all its benefits, historically, masturbation has had a bad rep.

Back in 1995, the U.S surgeon general at the time Dr Joycelyn Elders made a speech at the United Nations World AIDS Day. She was asked by an audience member about masturbation’s potential for discouraging early sexual activity.

She answered by saying that she thought masturbation was something that perhaps should be taught in the sex-education curriculum as part of human sexuality.

“In regard to masturbation, I think that it is something that perhaps should be taught. But we’ve not even taught our children the very basics. And I feel we have tried ignorance for a very long time and it's time we try education.”

She was fired for it.

What this move made very apparent was that there was, and still is, widespread stigma and taboo surrounding this topic. Many people, especially those whom working in the sexual health or pleasure sector, struggled to make sense of the situation.

One adult retailer called Good Vibrations decided to create National Masturbation Month, now known as International Masturbation Month, to celebrate healthy masturbation and assist with its normalization in society.

Why is there shame associated with masturbation?

Your upbringing, your sex education in school, your parents, your church, being caught or being reprimanded as a child, or even fear in a relationship that a partner masturbating means they aren’t interested in you.

There are all sorts of things that our life that can negatively impact our perception and understanding of masturbation. The fact that there is no pleasure education in our school systems certainly doesn’t help.

Masturbation month is here to inspire a positive discourse that can reverse the destructive messages of masturbation being dirty, shameful and something to be ashamed of. Because as much as our culture would like to suppress this act, self-love is the most important and universal sex act that a human being can perform. It’s good for our health, it's good for our self-esteem and is an important part of human sexual behaviour.

For most people, talking about it is still awkward, but it is one of the key ways that we can get to a place where are comfortable exploring our bodies, pleasuring our bodies and loving our bodies without judgement.

Talking about masturbation is the easiest and most effective way to start removing that stigma and let us all go for it without guilt, shame or embarrassment holding us back. We can’t go back in time and change how we learnt about masturbation, but we can change how we talk about it now and help out our future generations a little.

Feeling inspired?

Here are some of my favourite tips for solo loving.

Stop thinking of an orgasm as the only outcome

Yes, orgasms are a lot of fun and feel amazing, but masturbation is beneficial regardless of whether you orgasm or not. This month is the perfect time to slow things down and explore your body in new ways. Change the way you touch yourself by mixing up the speed of your strokes or changing the way you use your fingers.

And don’t forget about your other erogenous zones. The body is full of pleasure potential. Stimulate the nipples, the inner thigh or the opening of the anus instead of focusing solely on the clitoris or penis.

This type of play encourages your body to be more able to respond to multiple different sensory inputs. It’s easy to become dependent on one way to reach orgasm but this type of exploration can strengthen new pleasure pathways in your brain. The more you pave those paths, the easier it is to find them next time and experience more pleasure.

Add lubricant

Using lubricant is an easy and effective way to make your masturbation feel better. Think of it this way, does a massage feel better with or without massage oil? For many people, it is much the same thing with lubricant. Lube is designed for pleasure. It reduces friction without reducing sensation so that your hands and fingers can glide across your body. An amazing lubricant can make a big difference to your masturbation routine.

Use a sex toy

Our hands are wonderful tools for exploring and pleasuring our bodies but that doesn’t mean they are the only option. Using a sex toy can take your solo sex from great to amazing! And there really is a toy for everything. Some toys will mimic stimulation from a body part like a penis, mouth, or vagina while others will add an entirely new sensation like vibration.

Explore mutual masturbation with a partner

Being called solo sex doesn’t mean that it has to happen alone. It’s Masturbation Month. There are no rules! Masturbating with a partner is an extremely intimate act. It feels exciting, powerful, vulnerable and terrifying at the same time. But it’s a very effective form of sex ed within a relationship. Seeing the way that another person touches themselves for pleasure shows your exactly how you can touch that person for pleasure. Remember that you don’t need to be together to do this. Mutual masturbation is just as fun via video chat or over the phone.

Pleasure is important! It doesn’t matter if it is solo or partnered, it is something to seek in our lives and wanting to feel it is normal and healthy. While we have come a long way since Masturbation Month began, there is still work to be done.

How can I help promote Masturbation Month?

Talk about it. Do it. Explore yourself without shame. Try something new. Share a sex-positive meme! Let’s remind others that masturbation is extremely common. Almost everyone is doing it. So, let’s talk about it, normalize it and enjoy it.
